Welcome to Buenos Aries

Hola! Estamos en Buenos Aries! That is about how intricate our Spanish skills are now, but who knows, by the time we are on the plane back home we could be fluent!

Coming off a nine-hour flight at 7:00 am where we were packed like sardines, it could be reasoned how we might not have been the peppiest group. Even then, a lack of sleep did not stop us from entering Argentina for the first time with a smile on our faces!

We strolled through the airport and approached customs first, we could not help but laugh because every customs agent asked us which hotel we were staying at and no students knew the name of the hotel. Subsequently, all anyone in customs could hear was our group yelling “Melia!” (name of our hotel) across the customs room from station to station.

Once we grabbed our luggage and began to exit the airport, we were then greeted by our lovely guide Sofia! With a big smile and a Bryant University T-shirt on, she gathered us together and introduced herself.

The second we walked out of the airport, that tropical smell hit us like a wall, and we loved it. One of the immediate differences we realized were the whistles. Traffic cops were directing all the cars with whistles and in addition, everyone was using the crosswalks. For anyone who lives in New York or Boston, it is safe to say people do not always tend to follow the traffic laws at airports. None the less, we all made it onto the bus, and we were ready to begin our journey!

As we departed from the airport, some of us tried to fit in as much sleep as possible before the day starts while others had their eyes glued to the windows gazing as we drove through Argentina. Some things caught our eyes, such as a couple of stray dogs running around, or the fact that a litre of gas WAS ONLY $.76! After about thirty minutes we reached the heart of Buenos Aries. To get to our hotel we went down their famous street “9th of July” which Argentinians refer to as the widest road in the world. At the end of the road and a quick left, we finally reached our hotel, Melia.

This was just the first experience of an unforgettable trip! Check-in with us daily to see what we are up to!

Logan to Ezeiza!

We arrived at Logan airport around 9:20 in the morning. Unfortunately, a few of us were over the 50lb weight limit for our checked bags. We all worked together to rearrange our suitcases so every person was able to check their bags with no issue. Lauren Medeiros, a student who’s suitcase was 3 pounds over the limit said, “I am really happy it all worked out and I am thankful one of the professors had room in their suitcase to put my stuff in!” Immediately after weighing our suitcases, we all successfully checked our bags and headed towards our  gate,  B8. We had about two hours to relax and find something to eat before we needed to board the plane to Miami. After a semester of learning about Argentina and Uruguay, we were excited  to finally start our travels.

Luckily, the plane was on time and there weren’t any delays. After the roughly three hour flight, we landed in Miami where there was a 4 hour layover. During this layover we were able to get food in addition to walking around the airport to get moving before sitting on another plane all night. We used this time to bond immensely before spending the next 2 weeks together.

We boarded the plane to Buenos Aires at 8:05 pm. With only 9 hours left standing between our class and the best experience of our lives, excitement filled the plane; not to mention  the games included on the tv seats. Having games and movies built into the tvs made the experience exponentially better because it allowed for us to play against each other no matter where on the plane we were located!  Although the seating was random, majority of us were lucky and got placed next to one another to keep the conversations going! Brooke Williams said, “I’m so happy I got to sit next three of my friends because the time passed so much faster!”

Adios Chicos! This is just the beginning of an amazing experience we can not wait to share!

Bryant to Logan…

And away we go!

And away we go!
It’s 8:00am as 23 excited Bryant students and faculty gather in the Barrington hall with our luggage. Professor Gomez was kind enough to surprise us with Dunkin’ Donuts, is there any better way to start the trip? I think not.

While waiting for the bus, we packed gifts for the children at the orphanage into our suitcases. We rolled the luggage to the bus and loaded them in the bottom storage. After storing our luggage everyone quickly seated. Before departing, of course the professors ensured that we had our passport as we waved them in the air.

Some chose to sleep, listen to music, or talk about how anxious and excited they were. This gave us a chance to begin bonding as a group as we talked about how eager we were to engage with different cultures, learn about history, attempt to speak the language, and help the less fortunate.

Pulling up to the airport our anxiousness for the flight was at an all time high. We gathered our luggage and met up with the remaining 9 students who were dropped off by family.

Everyone began testing the weights of their suitcases in panic before checking their bags. Many were on the cusp of reaching 50 pounds.

We began checking in and, just as we were about to go through security, one student realized there was a mix up with their boarding pass. The airline helpers quickly fixed the problem and we informed our travel guide about the issue to ensure she was okay for the rest of the trip. We made it through security and settled by Gate B9 to wait for our flight.
